Title: Fluorene-containing polymers and compounds useful in the preparation thereof

Abstract: A compound of the formula: ##STR1## and compounds of the formulas: ##STR2## wherein R.sup.1 is independently in each occurrence C.sub.1-20 hydrocarbyl or C.sub.1-20 hydrocarbyl containing one or more S, N, O, P or Si atoms, C.sub.4-16 hydrocarbyl carbonyloxy, C.sub.4-16 aryl(trialkylsiloxy) or both R.sup.1 may form with the 9-carbon on the fluorene ring a C.sub.5-20 ring structure or a C.sub.4-20 ring structure containing one or more heteroatoms of S, N or O; R.sup.2 is independently in each occurrence C.sub.1-20 hydrocarbyl, C.sub.1-20 hydrocarbyloxy, C.sub.1-20 thioether, C.sub.1-20 hydrocarbylcarbonyloxy or cyano; R.sup.3 is independently in each occurrence C.sub.1-20 hydrocarbyl or C.sub.1-20 hydrocarbyl substituted with di(C.sub.1-20 alkyl)amino, C.sub.1-20 hydrocarbyloxy or C.sub.1-20 hydrocarbyl or tri(C.sub.1-10 alkyl)siloxy; a is independently in each occurrence 0 or 1; X is independently in each occurrence a halogen moiety; and Z is independently in each occurrence --B(OH).sub.2, --B(OR.sup.4).sub.2 or ##STR3## wherein R.sup.4 is independently in each occurrence a C.sub.1-10 alkyl group and R.sup.5 is independently in each occurrence a C.sub.2-10 alkylene group.
