Title: Methods of preparing optically pure sugars

Abstract: The invention relates to a method of preparing a compound of the following formula: ##STR1## wherein each of R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, and R.sup.4, independently, is hydrogen, alkyl, cycloalkyl, heterocycloalkyl, alkoxy, aryl, heteroaryl, aralkyl, heteroaralkyl, haloalkyl, or alkyloxyalkyl, provided that R.sup.1 and R.sup.2, optionally form a keto or, with the carbon atom to which they are attached, optionally form a cyclic moiety, and that R.sup.3 and R.sup.4.sub.1, optionally form a keto or, with the carbon atom to which they are attached, optionally form a cyclic moiety.
