Title: Continuously viewable, DC field-balanced, reflective, ferroelectric liquidcrystal image generator

Abstract: A reflection mode, ferroelectric liquid crystal spatial light modulatingsystem, includes a light reflecting type spatial light modulator. Thespatial light modulator has a light reflecting surface cooperating with alayer of ferroelectric liquid crystal light modulating medium switchablebetween first and second states so as to act on light in different firstand second ways, respectively. A switching arrangement switches the liquidcrystal light modulating medium between the first and second states and anillumination arrangement produces a source of light. An optics arrangementis optically coupled the spatial light modulator and the illuminationarrangement such that light is directed from the source of light into thespatial light modulator for reflection back out of the modulator and suchthat reflected light is directed from the spatial light modulator into apredetermined viewing area. The optics arrangement includes a passivequarter wave plate positioned in the optical path between the light sourceand the spatial light modulator and in the optical path between thespatial light modulator and the viewing area. A compensator cell is alsopositioned in the optical path between the light source and the spatiallight modulator and in the optical path between the spatial lightmodulator and the viewing area. The compensator cell has a layer offerroelectric liquid crystal light modulating medium switchable between aprimary and a secondary state so as to act on light in different primaryand secondary ways, respectively.
