Title: Pixels having extra-planar fringe field amplifiers and sliced common electrodes for multi-domain vertical alignment liquid crystal displays

Abstract: A multi-domain vertical alignment liquid crystal display using fringe field amplification is disclosed. Each pixel is subdivided into color dots. Further more each pixel contains extra-planar fringe field amplifiers that separate the color dots of a pixel. The voltage polarity of the color dots and extra-planar fringe field amplifiers are arranged so that fringe fields in each color dot causes multiple liquid crystal domains in each color dot. Specifically, the color dots and the extra-planar fringe field amplifiers are arranged so that neighboring polarized elements have opposite polarities. The performance of the display is further enhanced by using a sliced common electrode having common electrode slices over the color dots.
